Word Thursdays – Jared Coffin, Read by Don Coffin
March 28 @ 7:00 pm
Jared Coffin (1988-2015) attended Southern CT State University, where he was offered access into their Honors Program and given a tuition-paid Presidential Scholarship. At Southern, he was editor-in-chief of Folio, the school’s literary magazine, and served on the editorial board of the prestigious Honors Review Journal. He was also named a Connecticut Student Poet and was published in the Connecticut Review. He received a Graduate Teaching Fellowship at the University of South
Carolina, where he completed his MFA in Poetry. He was published in Consequence Magazine, Jasper, Menacing Hedge, Hiedra and other small presses. Posthumously, Jared’s work has been published in the Wallace Steven’s Journal and the Denver Quarterly. Jared’s name lives on through the work of the Jared Coffin Memorial Fund to promote a broader understanding of the issues of mental illness, which took Jared’s life. The Fund has organized Mental Health First Aid Classes resulting in over 500 individuals receiving certification. A Community Wide Mental Health Forum was also sponsored by the fund; thousands have viewed the discussion online. The winner of the Jared Coffin Poetry Prize contest, held by Folio at Southern CT State University, also receives recognition and a gift from the Memorial Fund. His father and mother will attend Word Thursdays to share Jared’s work.
