ABOUT the SUMMER WORKSHOPS

The In-Person, socially-distanced Workshops take place at Bright Hill Literary Center’s Education Wing, 94 Church Street, Treadwell, NY. Space is limited, so early registration is advised (summer registration begins April 19 with a final deadline June 1; registration forms will be available on BHLC’s website by APRIL 19. All of the Bertha Rogers-led Bright Hill Literary Workshops for Kids include writing and visual arts and in-corporate science and math for projects; we believe in STEAM.

THE WORKSHOPS take place from 9 am – 2:30 pm, daily; Bright Hill will provide morning and afternoon snacks, but kids should bring their own bag lunches. CHILDREN ages 6 – 17 (1st grade – 12th grade) are welcome. The workshops are designed and led by Bertha Rogers, master teaching artist and founding director of Bright Hill. The fee for each five-day literary workshop is valued at $300, but Bright Hill charges tri-county youth $160 and out-of-area students $250. Full and partial scholarships are available to permanent residents of Delaware and Otsego Counties (Delaware Academy/Delhi Central School students receive full scholarships provided by the Abraham Kellogg Education Fund). Registration is limited to 16 students.

LEGENDS OF THE STARS AND PLANETS – August 2-6. We will study and learn about the stars and planets in our universe, including the related legends from Mayan, Aztec, Roman, Norse, Asian, Middle Eastern, and other cultures. Activities (weather permitting) will include an evening at Bright Hill Farm to see the Perseid Showers), and we will build our own universes and write our own legends. On the last day of the workshop, we will present an exhibit and program for parents and friends.

Bertha Rogers (Delhi, NY) is a visual artist, poet, and translator/educator. Her art has been shown in solo and group exhibits in the US and internationally. More than 500 of her poems have been published in literary journals and anthologies. Her poetry collections include Wild, Again (2019) and Heart Turned Back (2010), both published by Salmon Poetry, Ireland;, Sleeper, You Wake; A House of Corners; The Fourth Beast; and Even the Hemlock. Her illustrated translation of the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf was published in 2000 (Birch Brook Press); and her illuminated translation of the 95 Anglo-Saxon Riddle-Poems from the 10th-Century Exeter Book, Uncommon Creatures, was published in 2019 (Six Swans Artist Editions). She has received grants from the MacDowell Colony, Millay Colony, Hawthornden International Retreat for Writers in Scotland, Caldera, Jentel, and others. Among her several New York State Council on the Arts and SOS grants are awards for the interdisciplinary exhibits, Planting Wildness (2015) and Wild: The Creatures of the Catskills (2016). With her late husband, Ernest M. Fishman, she founded Bright Hill Press and Literary Center of the Catskills in 1992; her literary/art accomplishments were read into the Congressional Record in 2017. She lives near Treadwell, NY with her dog, Joya, and her two cats, Embla and Aiya.
